On a spawning ground, in a Norwegian river, a male salmon can have several femals. Every now and then the males take an inspection tour to see how far the femals are from spawning. Moments for the memorybook for a cameraman.
First part of the spawning season the rivers was very low on water. It was a struggle to get the camera low enough to film the Salmon under water, and be careful enough without disturbing the fish or the nests.
Back from the north of Norway with fantastic video recordings of the run of the mystical Arctic Char. In crystal clear water it was a joy to observe the char come in from the see, acclimate to the fresh water, fight the river and start feeding on the flats in the fresh water lake. All to get ready to reproduce in the fall.
In Kari Toft series on NRK Ut i naturen, you can see some rare underwater shots of the endangered Big Brown trout from Hunderfossen in Norway. This was recorded in 2015, and made the news in the main channel, NRK.
In Kari Tofts series on NRK Ut i naturen, about ‘Play’ is a 4 minute edited short about the Atlantic wild salmon. This is the last job I made with my friend Gunnar O Nilsen, who suddenly passed away. R.I.P
Some video from my recordings can be shown on the series Wild Europe on National Geographic Wild. The footage is from wild atlantic salmon spawning in Norwegian rivers, from winter landscape and raindeer in Svalbard, and aerials from norwegian landscape.
Had a perfect trip to the Norwegian mountains. Calm winds, lovely temperature and varied skies made the drone footage stand out. Good to know the landscape, so the destinations can be timed to the sun or shadows.
After some beautiful days in the Norwegian mountains, I returned home with some amazing underwater recordings of grayling, spawning in crystal clear water. This fantastic and funny relative of the Atlantic salmon has its own way of doing things. Enjoyable time spent by the river.
